"For me, the program threw gasoline on a candle."

"The idea of running for office has been like skydiving without a parachute.
Now, I have a chute."

"I always thought I had something valuable to offer in the public servant role,
but dreaded the process. Now, I'm inspired."

The Tampa Bay Public Leadership Institute is a non-partisan leadership development program that asks participants to explore the possibility of public leadership in the future (without requiring a commitment to run for office) and learn now about the political process, leadership and public policy, while networking with leaders.

We're not a PAC or campaign group.  Instead, we're administered by a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that specializes in public leadership education.  The PLI is driven by a desire to encourage professionals in the region to consider how their experiences and talents could be used to address public issues.  The program cannot accept filed or declared candidates for office.

Limited time commitment...The annual class meets for a two-day seminar in late May/early June, half-day sessions every other month through May 2013 (six in all) and voluntary networking opportunities.

The PLI is ideal for participants who want to take a longer-term approach to leadership development by strengthening their networks and receiving an inside look at public issues and politics.

A similar program in Northeast Florida, the Jacksonville Regional Political Leadership Institute, was launched in 2009 and five graduates are now elected leaders, including Jacksonville's Mayor, three council members and a local municipal service district trustee.

The model program was recently featured in Florida Trend magazine.  View the longer profile here or to read the story naming the program as one of Florida Trend's 2011 Business Newsmakers of the Year click here (Once on the Florida Trend page, scroll down to "Statewide Political Leadership.")

Applications for the 2013 program will be available in late 2012.  Please “join our mailing list” above to be notified of our open application period.

"Getting people engaged in public service is a noble thing," said Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown, a 2009 graduate of the Jacksonville regional program. He told Florida Trend that the program taught him important coalition-building skills, among other things.  Learn more in News.

What class members are saying...

"This is an incredibly refreshing and innovative program for molding our future leaders. I am surprised that it was not already in place in Tampa Bay. Thank you for taking the initiative."

"TBPLI was incredibly educational and eye opening. I cannot imagine candidates running for office without thoroughly learning about and understanding the process before making the commitment. The opportunity to learn from so many experts was and is incredible."

"The thought of running for office has been like skydiving without a parachute. Now I have a chute and an idea of how to put it on."

"PLI is a great first step in the right direction for aspiring public leaders. It not only teaches you how to begin a career in public leadership, but how to begin that career ethically and with the trust of the people."

What leaders are saying...

“Tampa Bay has some phenomenal public leaders, but we simply can’t take that for granted in the future. With so many great opportunities and challenges ahead of us, we must be intentional about striving for excellence in our future public leaders.  We are encouraging, energizing and equipping a new generation of public leaders who will be prepared to use their skills and talents to confront our region's critical public-policy challenges.”
Vincent Dolan
President, Progress Energy Florida
Advisory Board Chair

The program will “educate increasing numbers of would-be candidates for public office about economic development across Tampa Bay.  Over time, more of our public leaders will understand what's important when it comes to growing our regional economy and creating jobs.”
Michelle A. Robinson
Southeast Region President
Verizon Communications
TBPLI Advisory Board Member

“Our public leaders are key partners in addressing the current and future needs of our region.  Providing potential future public leaders with this type of knowledge will help our entire region achieve a model for prosperity that is productive, inclusive and sustainable.”
Stuart Rogel
President and CEO
Tampa Bay Partnership
